Years back I had called the animal shelter, looking for a puppy German Shepard. What I found was Maera. A adult [what I thought to be] German Shepard. She was with a younger male German Shepard. I talked with the Animal Shelter and they were both supposed to have been put down weeks ago, but they didn’t have the heart. I remember one of the Animal control officers saying, “Someone spent alot of time with her.” And that kind of clicked. Someone had spent alot of time with her. After talking with the animal control officers for a while, I found out that there was someone who called in, asked if they had two dogs matching the descriptions, the animal shelter said yes, and they said okay. And did not come to collect the dogs. So the owner knew that they were in there. The owner also knew that it was a shelter that euthanised (put down) animals, yet the owner never collected his dogs. I don’t know why. I will never know why.
I took them both. I had the male for a few weeks and gave him away. I figured he was young and he would be easy to find a good home for. I was right. I gave him away to a woman, she called me back a few days later saying the dog was too noisy and that she couldn’t keep him…so I took him back. Several days later another couple looked at the male dog, and took him. I havn’t heard anything since, but I do know that they have taken good care of him. I’m sure of it. I felt really good about this couple. I had a “choke chain” on him, and they didn’t like it, they thought it was in humain. So if someone thinks that about these type collars, they must be decent, considering the fact that I totally advocate their use.
So I took the older female. When I got her she must have been at least ten years old. We had no clue what her past name was… the male we called, Wylee, since he looked like the coyotee in the famous cartoon. The older female I called, Maera. Maera is a greek name for one of the greek dogs. I felt it was appropriate. It’s pronounced Mare ah.
We have no clue why someone would just leave their dog at the pound like that. She really got attached to me, she would hear my car pull up the driveway and just start howling. She recognized the difference between my car and my girlfriends car, so she knew when to howl. She was very smart, and learned very quickly her new name. She learned all my animals very quickly and never showed any signs of aggression to any of my animals, cats included. She was very good with other animals, and humans. She was really a great dog. She already knew alot of tricks, including sit, lay down, roll over, etc. I did teach her a few more things, and she learned those really quickly.
Unfortunately, she passed away while I was gone, yesterday.
My girlfriend feeds the dogs in the morning, and I don’t want her to find out until tonight, when I have a chance to be with her. She had grown fairly attached to her also. The next time I see my girlfriend is at lunch, and she has to go to work after that, I don’t want her to be so sad right after lunch, and have to go to work like that. I might see if I can get her the afternoon off of work tomorrow. I have told her that I already fed the dogs so hopefully she wont feed Ginger tomorrow and realize that Maera isn’t there.
RIP Maera, we will miss you.

Knight.
